Spirit to the Stone – Building The Old Ghost Road

A story of creating New Zealand’s longest single track, The Old Ghost Road, as told by one of the founding fathers, Marion “Weasel” Boatwright.

In 2007, on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, a group of friends came up with the notion of exhuming a lost and never completed 19th century goldminers’ road and re-imagining it as a wilderness biking and tramping experience to rival all others. From the seed of the idea through the final delivery in December 2015, the creation story of The Old Ghost Road is a tale of gumption and audacity of the highest order. Here, one of the founding fathers takes you deep inside the process and the people that brought The Old Ghost to life.
